Collins Big Cat Collection- Level 1

We were recently sent a Level 1: First Reading at Home book set in the Collins Big Cat Reading Lions series. Moley is now 5 and just at the end of his year in reception. Moley is able to read most 3 letter most and has confidence in a lot of four letter words also.

The Collins name is a well know brand widely used in British schools and they are designed to help build listening, speaking and reading skills. Now available for parents to purchase to use at home, they can be used to help build first reading skills and comprehension. The pack of books are priced at £24 and contain 6 different book, 3 fiction and 3 non fiction.

The level 1 pack contains a story about a snail and ant race, a squirrel and a nut as well as a girl’s trip to the seaside and a non-fiction book about cats, the pond life cycle and a tale about a rat. Moley loved the illustrations in the books and found them a refreshing change from the books he is used to at school. We plan to use them as books to do our local library challenge this summer.

Each book came with additional material provided at the beginning and the end of each story to help reinforce the children’s understanding of the books and the phonics sounds introduced in the story. At the end of the book there is a story map to give the children prompts to help run back through the story.

Collins Picture Atlas

We were also sent a Collins Picture Atlas to review. Moley and G loved looking at the atlas together they were most interested looking at the pages which covered the countries they had covered at school. The pictures had simple detailing and used a beautiful mix of colours making the book exciting to read. The children loved learning new facts about the countries and enjoyed going through reading the myths.

The Collins Big Cat Reading Lions books and the Collins Picture Atlas can be ordered from the Collins website www.collins.co.uk/parents and www.collins.co.uk/page/Collins+Picture+Atlas.
