Guest Post- Why Craft with Young Children?

Hi!

My name is Maggy and I run the Craft Website Red Ted Art. At Red Ted Art, I regularly Get Crafty with my son “Red Ted”, almost 3yrs old. I also provide a range of tutorials that anyone can follow and enjoy - from making things for your children (e.g. Sock Stick Horses) to tutorials for yourself (e.g. how to improve your photographic skills). I do hope you pop by and have a look!
When Adele, asked if I wanted to write a guest post about “why craft with young children”, I jumped at the chance: as crafting with and for kids is something I a very passionate about! I love Adele’s new blog and all the craftiness she gets up to!

So to the question “Why Craft with Young Children”?

There are two categories my reasons fall into:

Developmental & Emotional:

I think most people are aware of the key developmental benefits of art and crafts with children:

·         Improve fine motor skills
·         Develop imagination
·         Develop cognitive skills
·         Improve confidence and self belief
·         Learn to follow instructions
·         Learn about your environment (e.g. seasonal crafting)

I won’t go into them individually, as I think they speak for themselves. These are things, that indeed could be developed in nurseries or schools, but the more you do them, the more you will get out of them, and I find the more my children want to get involved! I find, that my son is already beginning to get very good at following instructions or coming up with his own ideas compared to his peers, as we have been crafting much longer than his (slightly older) peers and he knows “what the drill” is. He will even come up to me and say what he wants to do next. Recently he sat down and drew Father Christmas from a book we had been reading.

And then there is the emotional benefits, which are often hugely underrated:

·         Enjoying quality time together
·         Creating fabulous childhood memories

Firstly, and more obviously, this is a chance for “quality time”, even if you are crafting with several children - older ones can help younger ones (also a developmental skills) and younger ones can bond with older ones or you.

And secondly: Memories! Ask yourself, what sort of childhood memories do you want your children to have? There are many things that make childhood beautiful - playing games together, going for walks, reading bedtime stories. Crafts is amongst them. What I like about our crafting, is that we usually combine crafting with a book. This helps my son understand a little what the “goal of our craft session is”, as well as having a lovely read together. Also, crafting can involve playing or the outdoors: collecting sticks and leaves to then make something and then to play with afterwards. So for me arts and crafts lets you bring many childhood memories together.

I thank my “adoptive” granny who spent hours with me, teaching me out to knit and sew - definitely happy memories for me and I hope very much to instil similar ones with my children?

If you don’t know where to starts, blogs like Monkeying Around and Red Ted Art come into it. We bring you weekly crafts that will hopefully help you to Get Crafty and show you that you often need few materials and little space! Yes, some of our crafts are very very messy, but many are not! Just pick the ones that suit you and your circumstances (i.e. often point people in the direction of our Monster Cards and Sock Bunnies - two simple crafts for you to enjoy).

Remember - your child will find anything you make FABULOUS! There is no right or wrong and that crafting is simply about having fun with your children! (and also remember, we also have days when my son has a melt down because I touched the paint brush the wrong way or because the yellow and the red got mixed up - thankfully not too often, but it is normal and part of it all).

If you want to read more about my thoughts on crafting with wee one, here is a post about my 9mth old daughter Pip Squeak “drawing”.

Thank you for taking the time to read my “thoughts” on this”! I hope it has inspired you to Get Crafty!

Apple Print Pumpkins

Today we were adventurous and with help from a friend we made apple Print pumpkins with 5 children under 6 years old. I am used to being creative with large numbers of children after my nursery nurse days but not when the ages are so different and in the home setting (what was I thinking). The gang had to dip and print the the apples which had some genius handles cut into them and then once dry the older children drew on some funky faces to turn them into pumpkins.

Jelly Pumpkins

Inspired by Red Ted Art we decided to have a go at some orange jelly pumpkins. These were great fun but very messy!
  • We cut the tops off five oranges and Lady P scooped out the centre with a spoon, this did take about twenty minutes and by the time she had finished both of us were cover head to toe in orange juice.
  • After this we made up the jelly together using the microwave method instead of the kettle ( a little extra ICT lesson for Lady P).
  • The jelly was the poured into the orange peel shells and popped in the fridge over night.
  • In the morning Lady P drew on the the faces that she wanted on each orange and I then cut them out using a knife.
I think these turned out really well and Im sure they will not last till Sunday, we are down to four already.

Toilet Roll Bats

Today Lady P choose to make some bats so we made one each using a toilet roll tube and wrapping it in gluey black paper, adding paper wings (we used handprints as a wing template) and chalk eyes. Lady P loved drawing the face especially! Can you guess who's is who's. . .ok don't answer that.

The primary reason for starting the Monkeying Around blog was to encourage me to do creative activities with my children and to share the fun with others.

This month we have been experimenting with food play including pasta necklaces and soggy flour play. We have had such a great messy time and Will definitely carry this on through to the end of October choosing a new theme next month.
So why not join the fun by using link added below to share your food play blog posts.

Gooey Fun

Today I thought it would be great to have a messy day! Diving into my cupboard putting aside the clean freak in me I went for this mixture:flour, water, blue food colouring and cake decorating Sprinkles. Yeap its going to be a messy one!
I took little mans clothes off and placed a mat on the floor. J was a little unsure at first but soon pushed his hands into the blue gooey mess. A great one try if you have a spare half hour.

Pasta Necklaces

Today we came up with the idea of making pasta necklaces. Lady P was so excited and quickly tidied away all her toys (it usually takeover about twenty minutes to agree to do this job).
This is one of those activities you need to be well organised for. Cover the table in newspaper or plastic sheeting this can be a very messy project. Cover two plates in cling film to place the pasta on once coated in paint and poured the pasta into a large bowl it make it easier.
P simply covered each piece of pasta in paint, once they were all coated the pasta was left to dry by the window (roughly 3 hours, turning every hour). The pasta was then threaded on to ribbon in a pattern. We made sure there was enough pasta on the necklace so that it could be slipped on and off over her head.
Finished!

Autumnal with a twist

On that way home from school last night we picked up some leaves.
When we got home I immediately got out the paint reds, orange, yellow, brown and green. Lady P took one look at the colors and put them back in the boxes and got out the bright colours. They're boring she said shaking her head and she got work on her master piece.
Oh dear looks like I have started to forget my childcare ways already. Never try and force children to do things the correct colour. Allow them to decide what colour they would like it to be and let them go wild!

flipping fun!

After a busy day at school for lady P we decided to have some messy fun and make some pancakes for pudding. We use a really simple recipe;
*1 egg
*1 cup of flour
*1 cup of milk
Simples!
After that we have fun flipping them and hoping they land in one piece then we cover them in fresh fruit and ice cream Mmmm.
When I was pregnant with lady P these were all I would eat. I think my love for them may have rubbed off on P Opp's!
